Laylat al-Qadr, is the greatest night of blessed Ramadhan, and in fact the grandest night of the whole year. It is the night on which God had descended His Last and most comprehensive set of laws for mankind, that is, the holy Qur’an, on the heart of His Final Messenger, Prophet Mohammad (SAWA). It is the Laylat al-Qadr or the Grand Night on which the doors of Divine Mercy are flung open to all those who pray, supplicate and try to keep awake, since the destiny of mankind is determined by God on this night for the year that follows.
On the Night of Qadr or the Grand Night, the divine banquet is spread out for all, and fortunate are those who avail this golden opportunity to pray, to supplicate, to contemplate, to seek forgiveness, to engage in acts of charity, to do good to others, and to strive for self-reform and the betterment of the society. As is clear from the Divine Words of the Holy Qur’an, the Night of Qadr is better in worth and value than a thousand months.
When asked about Allah’s saying concerning the Holy Qur’an “We sent it down on the Blessed Night”, the Prophet’s 5th Infallible Successor, Imam Mohammad Baqer (AS) replied “Yes, it is Laylat al-Qadr, it occurs every year in the month of Ramadhan, during its last ten nights. The Qur’an was not sent down but on the Grand Night as Allah says: In it every wise affair is made clear. That is, He decrees that night everything to happen during the year.”
Asked what is meant by the divine phrase “Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months,” the Imam said: “Good deeds – such as prayer, charity, etc. done this night are better than similar deeds during a thousand months without the Grand Night.”
It is worth noting that the Holy Qur’an does not mention any specific night of blessed Ramadhan as the Grand Night, so as to encourage prayer and worship throughout the month. The Prophet’s 6th Infallible Successor, Imam Ja’far as-Sadeq (AS) asked about the Night of Qadr said: “Seek it in 19th, 21st and 23rd nights.”
Some of the recommended acts on the Grand Night are as taking bath; reciting the Holy Qur’an, especially the Surahs titled Roum, Ankabout, and Dukhan; reciting the ziyarat or salutation to the Chief of Martyrs, the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Husain (AS), who reposes in holy Karbalal and of course, recitation of the famous supplication called Jowshan Kabeer, which is considered an excellent elucidation of the characteristics and all-pervasive power of the One and Only Creator. Another important act on this night is placing the Holy Qur’an on the head and supplicating to God with sincerity of intention by reciting the name of the Prophet, his daughter, Hazrat Fatema (SA) and the 12 Infallible Imams. This is another proof of the fact that the Saqalayn, which is the Qur’an the Ahl al-Bayt are never separate from each other.
In short, the Night of Qadr is the Grandest Night of the year. In the light of hadith, it is said that this night Allah, the Exalted decrees providence and every other affair of mankind to happen throughout the year. Angels descend on Planet throughout the night with God’s blessings, and our actions are placed before Imam Mahdi (AS), whose reappearance we are eagerly awaiting so that the Earth is cleansed of all traces of corruption and oppression with the establishment of the global government of peace, prosperity and justice.
Here we present you an anecdote. In the time of Prophet Moses (PBUH) there was an old man who despite his age did not believe in God. Once he tried to ridicule Moses by saying: Are you going to Mount Sinai for prayer and supplication to God? Moses answered yes. The old man said: I have a message for your God. I want you to tell your God that I am in no need of Him and I do not want His sustenance.
Moses was saddened at this ignorance person but continued his trek to Mount Sinai without saying anything. As usual he prostrated to the Unseen but Omnipresent God by putting his forehead on the ground and began praising the Lord Most High. After finishing his prayer and supplication he intended to return, when a revelation enlightened his heart with God’s words, as to why you have conveyed to Me the message of My servant who keeps away from me? Moses said: My God You know better what the disbeliever has said. The reply came: Go Moses and tell him: if my Divinity is an embarrassment for you, I am not ashamed of having a servant like you. You do not want my sustenance but I provide you sustenance without you requesting it. Moses conveyed God’s message to the old disbeliever, who suddenly realized his mistake and became aware of the Infinite Mercy of God. With tears in his eyes and a trembling voice, he said: O Moses, I wasted my life without knowing how Merciful God is.
