Two people from US base in Japan killed

A civilian contractor and an airman from a US Air Force base in the city of Okinawa, Japan, have been found dead in separate incidents.

The two people from Kadena Air Base were killed on Saturday, Stars and Stripes reported.

The contractor was found dead at an off-base hotel room early Saturday morning, an Air Force 18th Wing said in a statement.

The airman died during a diving accident off Okinawa’s coast. He was airlifted to Nakagami Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.

The statement said the names of the dead people are being withheld until 24 hours after the notification of next of kin.

The recent two deaths bring the number of people from Kadena died during the past two weeks to at least five people.

On Oct. 5, three airmen from Robins Air Force Base, Ga. died after being swept out to sea by high waves associated with Typhoon Phanfone.

Kadena Air Base is the second-largest base in the United States Air Force and the hub of airpower in the Pacific.

Almost 18,000 Americans and over 4,000 Japanese employees and contractors make up Team Kadena, according to the base’s website.
