Plague, botulism microbes found in US

Scientists have discovered long-forgotten vials in US government laboratories that cause botulism and plague.

The highly poisonous substances were discovered when the National Institutes of Health (NIH) began an investigation of its facilities after a scientist found vials of smallpox dating from the 1950s, The Independent reported on Saturday.

The century-old containers included vials of ricin and pathogens that cause botulism, the plague and a rare tropical infection. The substances have now been destroyed.

NIH officials said some of its laboratories were cleared to use deadly substances and were checked regularly. But the recent discoveries were from historical collections that were once allowed to be stored without regulation.

In a statement, the NIH said, “NIH takes this matter very seriously. The finding of these agents highlights the need for constant vigilance in monitoring laboratory materials in compliance with federal regulations on biosafety.”
