Floods kill over 100 in India, Pakistan

The death toll from devastating floods in India and Pakistan has reached over 100, with many roads still closed and some areas cut off from the rest of the country.

Heavy rains continued to pound the Pakistani province of Punjab and India-controlled Kashmir on Friday, officials said.

Search and rescue groups reported at least 70 fatalities in Pakistan, while 30 people were killed in India.

Some of the victims were trapped under collapsed roofs, buried under mud or caught under fast-moving floods.

The region has been worst hit by monsoon flooding and mudslides in more than two decades.

In several parts of Kashmir, many schools and public institutions closed and power and water supplies were suspended, officials said. Most of the federal rescuers were sent to the areas to assist the administration in relief and rescue efforts

Overflowing streams and rivers, including the Jhelum River, flooded at least 100 villages across the Kashmir valley.

The state government said it will allocate 200 million rupees (USD 3.3 million) for relief and rescue efforts.

The death toll is expected to rise as authorities are receiving more information related to the disaster.

Heavy rains are expected to ease on Saturday, reports said.

Nearly 200 people were killed and around 1.5 million affected by flooding around Pakistan in 2013.
